The effect of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy on central macular thickness (CMT)

Purpose:
To investigate the effect of Nd:YAG capsulotomy on central macular thickness (CMT). There were also investigated the effect of the capsulotomy on best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), on intraocular pressure (IOP) and on anterior chamber depth (ACD) changes.

Methods:
Our study included 50 patients (50 eyes) with posterior capsular opacification after uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery and intraocular lens implantation, which underwent Nd:YAG Laser capsulotomy. We determine CMT, BCVA, IOP, and ACD before laser and one day, one week, four weeks and twelve weeks after laser treatment.
Results:
We found no significant difference at CMT 245 ± 20 μm and 260 ± 18 μm before and 3 months after laser treatment. Also there was no significant difference between pre and post-treatment of IOP, 12 ± 3 mmHg before and 13 ± 3 mmHg after and of ACD, 4,03 ± 0,56mm before and 4,08 ± 0,55 mm after laser treatment. All patients had a statistically significant improvement at visual acuity after YAG laser, from 0,40 logMaR at 0,10 logMaR 3 months post-treatmment (p < 0,001).
Conclusions:
Nd:YAG capsulotomy is an effective and safe method of treatment of posterior capsular opacification, with statistically significant improvement at BCVA.
