IPCL (Implantable phakic contact lens) results in refractive correction of myopic and hypermetropic eyes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess safety & efficacy of IPCL implantation for correction of refractive errors

Setting:

Thind Eye Hospital, Jalandhar, Punjab,India

Methods:

IPCL is an aspheric, hybrid acrylic, posterior chamber phakic lens which can be implanted through incision size less than 2.8 mm. A retrospective analysis of eyes implanted with IPCL from february 2014 to september 2017 was done with regard to demographic profile, preoperative refractive error and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), operative difficulties, postoperative uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and postoperative complications.Postoperative UCVA was compared to preoperative BCVA.

Results:

Retrospective analysis was done of 571 eyes of 304 patients (age range -18-38 years) with minimum follow up of 6 months. Myopic eyes with/without astigmatism far outnumbered hypermetropic eyes (93.69%, n=535) as did the eyes with toric IPCL implantation (75.83%,n=433). None of the eyes had any intraoperative difficulties in implantation of IPCL. 94.39% (n=539) eyes had same UCVA as preoperative BCVA (myopes=508, hypermetropes=31). Gain of 1 or more lines was achieved in 4.37% eyes. Loss of 1 or more lines was seen in 1.22% eyes. Postoperative complications included raised IOP (2.10%), cataract formation (0.17%), IPCL exchange (0.17%), retinal detachment (0.17%).

Conclusions:

IPCL has been found to be easily implantable lens with excellent viual outcome in myopic as well as hypermetropic eyes.
