A new implantable phakic intraocular lens (IPCL): a preliminary report

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report on the short term refractive outcomes of a new posterior chamber intraocular lens, the Implantable Phakic Contact Lens (IPCL, Care Group, Baroda, India) for high myopia.

Setting:

Nandadeep eye hospital and Institute, Sangli, Maharashtra, India

Methods:

Data from all eyes undergoing IPCL implantation between January 2014 to December 2015 with a minimum of 2 year follow up were included. Thirty eight eyes of 20 patients were included in the study. Patients underwent cycloplegic refraction, slit lamp evaluation, topography and anterior segment optical coherence tomography before and after IPCL implantation. Univariate and multivariable linear regression analysis was used to identify baseline variables that could predict vault change.

Results:

The mean myopic spherical equivalent preoperatively was -11.0+5.7 (median= -11.8D, IQR= -8.5 to -14.6D, range= -5.75D to -22.5D). Visual acuity improved from (0.23+0.2 logMAR) to postoperative day1 (0.13+0.1 logMAR) (p=0.002) and remained stable at 2 year follow up (At 2 hours postop, the IPCL vault was 695+194mic(95%CI= 630-760mic) and reduced to 657+183 at 1week (95%CI=590-719mic (p=0.03) and remained unchanged thereafter. Multivariable linear regression showed that WTW diameter and IPCL sphere power (27mic reduction in vault for every 1 diopter increase in IPCL sphere power, 95%CI= -47 to -6 mic p=0.014) were the two factors predicting vault at 1 month.

Conclusions:

In our preliminary study, we find that IPCL provides excellent refractive outcomes and maintains a safe vault in the early postoperative period.
