The clinical practice of phakic IOLs: a single surgeon's experience

Purpose:
To report my personal experience with different phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) in a high volume private practice. Clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction were analysed

Methods:
161 eyes of 93 consecutive patients who had undergone pIOL implantation between December 2009 and December 2017 and had completed a clinical postoperative assessment were analysed. Data collected included demographic parameters, visual refractive sphere, and astigmatism, BCVA prior to and after the surgery, type of lens used, change of BCVA, complications, enhancements and patient responses to a standardized questionnaire
Results:
The mean age was 33years, Female/Male: 49/51; Hyperopia/Myopia: 19/81. Lens types: Staar-ICL [Toric/Centraflow-minus/EVO+Toric/EVO+/plus/CentraflowToric-minus in 52/35/13/6/5/5 respectively], Ophtec Artiflex-[Myopia/Artisan-Hyperopia/Artisan-Myopia in 25/12/8]. The mean change in UCVA was from 20/400 to 20/25 in myopia and from 20/200 to 20/30 in hyperopia; change in BSCVA 20/25 to 20/18 (myopia) and 20/25 to 20/32 (hyperopia); spherical equivalent reduction from -9.32(-0.25 to -25.00) to 0.5Ds in myopes and from +5.27(0.00 to +9.00) to 0.5Ds in hyperopes, change in cylinder from -1.55(0.00 to -8.50) to -0.67Ds. Complications: Dry eyes, elevated IOP 2 each (1.2%), corneal edema, iritis 1 each (0.6%); Enhancements 12(7.5%). Patient satisfaction 96.4%
Conclusions:
Phakic IOL implantation in a high volume private practice can be performed safely with excellent visual outcomes and high patient satisfaction.
