Safety and visual performance of posterior chamber collamer phakic intraocular lens in low to moderate myopia

Purpose:
To evaluate safety and refractive outcome of implantable collamer phakic intraocular lens (ICL) in low to moderate Myopia.

Methods:
A retrospective, consecutive, interventional case series of Visian V4 ICL (Staar surgical) implanted in 82 eyes of 50 patients of age group 21 to 35years, mean 25 years. Patients having myopia of spherical equivalent 2.75D to 10D, and cylinder 1D 5.5D were included in the study. Patients having myopia above 10D, were not included. Post operative visual outcome, refraction, and any complications were noted.
Results:
Preoperative mean spherical equivalent was 6.71D (range 2.75D to 10D) and the mean preoperative cylinder was 2.04D(range 1D 5.5D).
The mean preoperative CDVA was LOGMAR 0.08.The mean post operative UCDVA with ICL was LOGMAR 0.036.There were 50 eyes that gained at least ≥1 line of CDVA. Patients were followed for 159 months(mean 19.8 months). Postoperatively 12 (14.6%) patients complained of halos at night time, which disappeared in 2 months and 2 (2.4%) patients had transient rise in IOP, which was medically managed. There was no intraoperative complication. Till the last followup visit no eye had any cataract, glaucoma or uveitis.
Conclusions:
Implantation of ICL is safe, predictable, accurate (refractive outcome) and useful in low
to moderate myopic patient range 2 to 10D. This can be a good alternative to laser - in - situ keratomileusis.
