Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in patients with conjunctival pterygium

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Despite several major studies, etiology of conjunctival pterygium has not been identified yet. In this study, we aimed to evaulate relationship between grade of pterygium and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) that is a new potential predictor of inflammation in several diseases.

Setting:

Duzce University School of Medicine, Ophthalmology Department.

Methods:

This cross-sectional observational study includes 30 patients with conjunctival pterygium and 31 age- and sex-matched control subjects. All participants underwent a detailed ophthalmological examination and pterygium was graded. Serum samples were obtained from all subjects, and the NLR was calculated.

Results:

The NLR was 1.94 ± 0.44 in the pterygium group versus 1.87 ± 0.73 in the control group (P=0.141). There was no significant difference in terms of both demographic data and means of CBC(complete blood count) results. Moreover, there was no statistically significant correlation between NLR and grade of pterygium.

Conclusions:

In this study, no evidence supporting potential inflammatory origin of pterygium was found. Further randomized studies with larger sample size are required.
