Central corneal thickness according to the activity of thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy and hormonal status of the patients

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate whether the central corneal thickness (CCT) shows alterations in patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), according to the disease activity and hormonal status.

Setting:

The patients have been examined at the Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University, Plovdiv, University eye clinic " St. George", Plovdiv

Methods:

Fifty patients with TAO and 25 control subjects were included in the study, all of them having undergone a thorough ophthalmic examination. The disease activity was evaluated by the Clinical Ativity Score. The hormonal status was determined by laboratory tests of FT3, FT4 and TSH. The central corneal thickness was measured with ultrasonic pachymetry. The patients were divided into 5 groups - 1st – euthyroid patients with TAO activity, 2nd – hyperthyroid patients with TAO activity, 3rd – euthyroid patients without TAO activity, 4th – hyperthyroid patients without TAO activity, 5th – control subjects without any systemic or ocular disease.

Results:

TAO activity was registered in 21 patients (42%). Twenty-nine patients (58%), showed no TAO activity. Euthyroid status was established in 34 patients (68%), and hyperthyroid status- in 16 patients (32%). CCT values of patients with TAO with hyperthyroid or euthyroid hormonal status showed no statistically significant difference among themselves and versus control group. A statistically significant difference in the CCT values between the groups according to the TAO activity was not found.

Conclusions:

The CCT in patients with TAO does not depend on the activity of the disease and hormonal status.
