Evaluating the accuracy of a new combined telecentric keratometry and swept-source OCT based method to determine IOL power in patients undergoing cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the accuracy of the new True Keratometry [TK®] software for measuring the corneal power in patients undergoing cataract surgery.

Setting:

Nethradhama Superspeciality Hospital, Bangalore, India

Methods:

TK® is a new measurement combining telecentric keratometry and SWEPT Source OCT technology for assessment of the anterior and posterior corneal surface. The purpose of TK® is to replace standard keratometry in order to reduce outliers and improve refractive outcomes in cataract surgery. Hypothetical prediction errors were retrospectively calculated using Barrett Universal II and Barrett Universal II with TK® on prospectively collected data from electronic medical records.

Results:

54 eyes of were included in this study. Mean residual power using Barrett Universal II formula was -0.144 ± 0.28 diopter [D]. The mean difference between the predicted versus the achieved post operative refractive status using Barrett Universal II was -0.118D which was statistically significant [p=0.011]. The mean absolute error [MAE] using Barrett Universal II with and without TK® was 0.222 ± 0.16D and 0.232 ± 0.16D respectively. The MAE was not statistically significant between the two groups. Using the Barrett Universal II without TK®, 96.29% of the eyes were within ±0.5D of predicted refraction, while 68.52% were within ±0.25D.

Conclusions:

Keratometry estimated by conventional methods may be accurate enough to calculate IOL power in normal eyes undergoing cataract surgery.
