Abstract Details
Purpose:
To investigate, record and study diabetic retinopathy in patients with gestational diabetes.
Setting:
Department of Opthalmology, General Hospital Of Kavala, Kavala, Greece
Methods:
152 patients with gestational diabetes according to the "International Association of Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Groups" criteria were prospectively examined. The examination included recording of visual acuity with Snellen's chart, control of anterior eye chamber under the slit lamp, retinal biomicroscopy after mydriasis and optical coherence tomography. For statistical analysis the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 23 software was selected.
Results:
No patient was found to have fundoscopic defects consistent with diabetic retinopathy. No pathologic findings of the anterior chamber were observed under slit lamp examination. 21,6% of patients were found to have some refractive error. Of these patients 87,5% had myopia, 12,5% hyperopia and 37,5% astigmatism.
Conclusions:
Patients with gestational diabetes do not exhibit ophthalmic findings consistent with diabetic retinopathy. Gestational diabetes does not seem to influence the visual acuity nor the refractional ability of pregnant women.
