Abstract Details
Purpose:
To investigate the correlation between the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) measured by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and retrobulbar blood flow measured by color Doppler imaging (CDI) after uneventful cataract surgery.
Setting:
A prospective clinical study was performed at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Kaunas Clinics.
Methods:
15 eyes of 15 patients (mean age 70.13±8.58 years) with senile cataract underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. SFCT measurements were performed preoperatively (P) and 1 month (M1) after surgery using 1050 nm DRI Triton SS-OCT (Topcon, Tokyo, Japan). The ETDRS grid subfield was assessed in the central ring. Measurements were performed at the same time 1-2 PM. Retrobulbar haemodynamic parameters were examined by CDI (Mindray, Shenzhen, China). The peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), resistive index (RI) in the ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA), temporal posterior ciliary arteries (TPCA) were measured.
Results:
Mean PSV difference (before surgery – after surgery) was -0.55±3.51 cm/s of OA, -0.17±1.45 cm/s of CRA, -0.64±1.83 cm/s of TPCA. Mean EDV difference (before surgery – after surgery) was -1.34±2.33 cm/s of OA, -1.49±7.13 cm/s of CRA, -0.51±1.24 cm/s of TPCA. Mean RI difference (before surgery – after surgery) was -0.03±0.06 of OA, 0.02±0.07 of CRA (in all parameters p > 0.05), except -0.05±0.08 of TPCA (p=0.047). No correlation between the changes of SFCT ocular blood flow parameters was observed.
Conclusions:
There was no statistically significant difference between ocular blood flow before and 1 month after uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery in all parameters, except decrease in RI of PCA. There was no correlation between the change of SFCT and the change of ocular blood flow parameters before and after surgery. Further investigations should be continued to confirm and better clarify our findings.
