Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the clinical and
histological changes by light microscope and electron
microscope which may
occur to rabbit eye lashes after topical use of
latanoprost
for two months
Setting:
sohag university
Methods:
Application of latanoprost (lumigan )
eye drops to the eye lid of 10 male rabbits daily for two
months then
scarification of rabbits and histological examination by
light microscope and
electron microscope with comparison to control untreated
group.
Results:
This study confirmed clinical
differences in hair appearance between the
latanoprost-treated lashes and the
untreated lashes, including increased number, length,
thickness, curvature and
pigmentation. Histological examination show increased number
of hair follicles
with hyperplasia of follicular cells and increased activity
of the melanocytes
in the form of irregular euchromatic nucleus and
dilated rough endoplasmic
reticulum.
Conclusions:
latanoprost has clinical and
histological effect on hair follicles of eye lashes of male
rabbits which may be
harmful due to hyperplasia noted in both light and electron
microscope.
