Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the use of positive hydro pressure technique as a method of cleaning of corneal stromal bed after laser ablation
Setting:
D D Eye Institute, India
Methods:
In this prospective study,480 eyes of 240 patients in 22 months underwent LASIK procedure. After laser ablation, the LASIK interface was cleaned with merocel sponge under positive pressure of free flowing balance salt solution for 5-8 seconds. Corneal flap was reposited back and then the interface was examined for any residual debris intra operatively under microscope. The patients were again examined immediately after the procedure and at post-op Day 1 on the slit-lamp.
Results:
Out of 480 eyes, 427 eyes were totally free of interface debris and no further cleaning of interface was required. In the remaining eyes, metallic particles, plastic particles, linen fibres or meibomian gland secretions were seen and interface was cleaned with cannula
Conclusions:
Normally after cleaning of LASIK interface with cannula, a small amount of debris can be seen under the stromal interface. These debris may arise from the instruments used and may consist of metallic particles, plastic particles, linen fibres or meibomian gland secretions. Free flowing hydro technique of cleaning LASIK interface exerts a positive hydro pressure at the interface and minimizes the retention of debris at the interface. This technique can be used as a safe and reliable method of cleaning of interface debris as employed in this study
