Corneal refractive surgery to treat refractive errors in adult amblyopic eyes

Purpose:
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of laser refractive surgery in amblyopic adult eyes
Setting:
Catholic University of Sacro Cuore, Department of Ophthalmology, Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Foundation, Italy, Rome
Methods:
25 eyes of 25 adult patients (range: 24-57yrs) with severe monocular amblyopia were submitted to different laser refractive surgery (PRK, LASEK or LASIK) for the correction of the ametropia. Two patients had strabismic amblyopia, 23 patients had an anisometropic amblyopia. The preoperative and postoperative UCVA and BSCVA were analyzed. Patients were followed up at 1 week, 1 months, 3 and 6 months
Results:
The mean preoperative BSCVA was 0.56 (range: 0.2 – 0.8). Six months after surgery 19 patients (76%) experienced one or more lines of BSCVA improvement. The BSCVA was unchanged in 4 eyes (16%) and was worse in 2 eyes (8%). The mean postoperative BSCVA was 0.73 snellen (range: 0.1 - 1.0)
Conclusions:
The laser refractive surgery seems to be safe and more effective than the spectacle or contact lens correction in adult amblyopic eyes. However, despite the little number of patients examined we found a significant increase in visual acuity, such improvement must not be mistaken with the idea of a surgical treatment or a final solution for adult amblyopia
