Femtosecond penetrating keratoplasty in keratoconus

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of our study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of Femtosecond penetrating keratoplasty at the patients with keratoconus.

Setting:

Scientific research institute of eyes disease, Kazakhstan, Almaty

Methods:

8 patients (8 eyes) with keratoconus II-III degree underwent complete diagnostic examination; there were no any contraindications for the surgical treatment. Femtosecond laser penetrating keratoplasty was performed by using VisuMax «Carl Zeiss Meditec» and treatment pack size M with optic diameter not less then 7,5 mm for recipient, and 8.0 mm for donor transplant. The average age was 29 years. Spherical equivalent refraction was average equal to (-) 6,5  0,11 D, cylinder (-) 4,25  0,12 D. UCVA in this group was average 0,08±0,08 and BCVA - 0,5±0.09. Observation period was 12 months.

Results:

The UCVA after operation improved in all patients in comparison to UCVA before it and was 0,25±0,14. We obtained diminishing of postoperative astigmatism and stabilization in corneal topography, spherical equivalent refraction was average equal to (-) 2.12 ±0,09 D, cylinder (-) 2.5±0,06. BCVA - 0,5±1.11. The postoperative period proceeded without any significant complications; the sutures were removed on 7-8 months after the operation. In all cases there was a transparent engraftment of the donor transplant.

Conclusions:

The received results showed the effectiveness of and safety of Femtosecond penetrating keratoplasty at the patients with keratoconus.
