Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate outcomes of SmartSurf "no touch" technology in myopic patients undergoing photorefracive keratectomy (PRK)

Setting:

Ophthalmology Clinic, Medical Centre of Postgraduate Education, Warsaw, Poland Libermedic, Warsaw Eye Centre, Warsaw, Poland Medicover Hospital, Warsaw, Poland

Methods:

25 patients (50 eyes, 16 female, 9 male, age 22-39) undergoing SmartSurf ("no touch" epithelium removal) PRK + MMC. Laser system Amaris 1050RS, Schwind. MMC after laser ablation and bandage contact lens. Follow up 5 days, 14 days, 1 month, 3 months after the surgery.

Results:

Mean UCVA pre-op 0.18 Snellen (+/- 0.04). Mean UCVA 3 m post-op 1.14 Snellen (+/- 0.1). Mean BCVA pre-op 1.02 Snellen (+/- 0.07). Mean BCVA 3 m post-op 1.18 Snellen (+/-0.08). No complications were observed. 6 months post-op results pending.

Conclusions:

SmartSurf "no touch" technology is a safe and effective type of PRK myopic treatment. It is fast, and thanks to "no touch" epithelium removal less stressful for patients. Precise laser beam which achieves smoother corneal surface and epithelium edge together with use of MMC helps to avoid complications like haze and scarification.
