Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the correlations between Macular vessel Density and inner Macular Thickness in patients with early stage of Primary Open-angle Glaucoma (POAG) using the optovue optical coherence tomography Angiography (OCT-Angio).

Setting:

3rd Minsk City Clinical Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Belarusian State Medical University, Minsk, Belarus

Methods:

In a cross-sectional study, 60 eyes of 43 patients with early POAG, 44 eyes of 27 glaucoma suspects and 30 eyes of 15 control subjects with a respective mean age of 65.47 ± 9.59, 56.53 ± 9.31 and 51.65 ± 4.16, underwent vessel density and retina thickness measurements in the 6 x 6 mm macular zone using OCT-Angio, RTVue-100. Parameters evaluated were superficial vessel density and inner macular thicknesses of the total, superior, inferior, nasal and temporal quadrants of the macular. A Spearman Rank Order Correlations was use to compare between the vessel density and the structural changes.

Results:

The early POAG patients had significant decrease in all the parameters of both the macular vessel densities and inner macular thicknesses as compared to the control group (p<0.05) but not compared to the glaucoma suspect group (p>0.05). Positive correlations were identified between the macular vessel densities and the various inner macular thickness in all the parameters analyzed. However, none was statistically significantly correlated (p>0.05). The highest correlation was noticed between temporal inner Macular Thickness and vessel densities in the inferior and nasal macular quadrants (R= 0.35).

Conclusions:

In early POAG, Non-statistically significant positive correlations were identified between the superficial macular vessel density and inner macular thickness using the OCT-Angio RTVue-100.
