Amniotic membrane transplantation for the management of conjunctival retraction during bleb revision: one year follow-up

Abstract Details

Purpose:

to describe one-year results of two cases of early and late bleb leaks managed successfully using amniotic membrane (AM) as an adjuvant substrate.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Kasr Al Ainy hospitals, Cairo University

Methods:

The first case was a patient with recurrent shallow anterior chamber due to conjunctival retraction at the limbus following an uneventful phacotrabeculectomy. The case was managed with external bleb revision and an adjuvant cryo-preserved AM. The second case had a late onset bleb leak with previous repeated trabeculectomies. Failure of closing the conjunctiva with a conjunctival graft, a dry AM was successfully used to close the defect.

Results:

after one year, the first case showed complete success with intraocular pressure maintained in the low teens on no treatment while the second case showed qualified success with the intraocular pressure controlled with a fixed combination eye drops.

Conclusions:

amniotic membrane can be used as an adjuvant in external bleb revision when conjunctival flexibility is compromised to maintain the integrity of the ocular surface and promote the postoperative success rate.
