Complications of combined cataract and glaucoma surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the complications of combined cataract - glaucoma surgery performed by phacoemulsification and IOL implantation combined with trabeculectomy.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Clinic, University Hospital of Patras, Rio, Greece. Hippokratio General Hospital of Athens, Athen, Greece.

Methods:

In our study 32 eyes with glaucoma and cataract were included. Combined phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy surgical procedure were performed. All patients had preoperative intraocular pressure over 24 mm Hg under topical treatment. Phacoemulsification was performed with 2.75 mm incision. After surgery, all patients were treated with topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Results:

25 eyes (87.5%) did not present complications after surgery. In 3 cases we noticed flat anterior chamber; in these patients, anterior chamber restored a normal size in 3 - 7 days after surgery. 2 patients had choroidal detachment, which resolved in 4 - 10 days. Two patients presented postoperativer corneal oedema, which regressed in 10 - 15 days.

Conclusions:

The combined cataract - glaucoma surgery is a safe procedure. Only 12.5% of eyes that underwent phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy had complications.
