Preliminary results of CO2 laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery (CLASS) for open-angle glaucoma treatment in Hungary

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of CO2 Laser-assisted Sclerectomy Surgery (CLASS) in primary open-angle glaucoma.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary

Methods:

Patients with advanced primary open-angle glaucoma who underwent non- penetrating CLASS-procedure with a CO2 laser system [OT-134- IOPtiMate (IOPtima Ltd, Ramat-Gan, Israel)] at our department from March 2017 were included into this study. Intraocular pressure (IOP), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), C/D-ratio and number of medications were documented at baseline. IOP, BCVA, need of anti-glaucoma medications and possible postoperative complications were evaluated at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months postoperatively.

Results:

11 patients were enrolled (age: 61.55 ± 14.73 years). The preoperative C/D-ratio was 0.83±0.19 and the IOP was 24.18±8.65 mmHg. After surgery IOP decreased significantly to 15.12±8.99 mmHg (p=0.04) at one day and to 15.00±5.42 mmHg (p=0.03) at one week. IOP stabilized under the preoperative values at one month (17.27±6.60 mmHg), at 3 month (19.00±8.87 mmHg) and at 6 month (16±2.03 mmHg) (p>0.05). Number of antiglaucoma medications decreased significantly at the first and third month (from 1.89±0.93 (11/10) to 0,0±0,0 (11/1) p<0.001 and to 0.33±0.58 (7/2) p=0.001).

Conclusions:

IOP decreased effectively after CLASS-procedure in the early postoperative period and patients with advanced primary open angle glaucoma required significantly less additional anti-glaucoma medications.
