Differences in lifestyle and health status among glaucoma suspect and open-angle glaucoma

Abstract Details

Purpose:

We conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate the difference of lifestyle and health status between patients with glaucoma suspect (GS) and patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG)

Setting:

Kong Eye Clinic, Seoul, Korea

Methods:

We conducted retrospective study for patients who visited our ophthalmology clinic from April 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017. All of the initial patients in our department completed a questionnaire consisting of 25 questions. Patients who were diagnosed with NTG and POAG were selected through serial glaucoma test after initial screening. The results of the questionnaires of these patients were analyzed.

Results:

Fifty two GS patients and 68 OAG patients were enrolled in the final analysis. The mean age, sex distribution, body weight, height, and Body mass index of the two disease groups were not different. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of diabetes, thyroid disease, and hyperlipidemia, but prevalence of hypertension (p = 0.02) the number of patients with hypotension was significantly higher in OAG group (p = 0.01) and OAG have more prevalence of family history of glaucoma (p = 0.004). Patients with OAG were more likely to wear glasses.

Conclusions:

Among lifestyle and health status factors hypertension, hypotension, family history of glaucoma associated with OAG.
