Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the change in intraocular pressure (IOP) after uneventful cataract surgery in eyes with open-angle glaucoma receiving latanoprost monotherapy.

Setting:

Hippokratio General Hospital of Athens, Athens, Greece. Ophthalmology Clinic, University Hospital of Patras, Rio, Greece.

Methods:

Thirty-two eyes of 22 patients with history of open-angle glaucoma well-controlled with latanoprost, that underwent uneventful phacoemulcification with three-piece IOL implantation were included in this retrospective study. IOP was monitored for a minimum period of 6 months after cataract surgery.

Results:

Mean age of subjects was 68+/-7 years old and duration of treatment with latanoprost was 29+/-8 months. IOP decreased by 1.9+/-0.6, 2.7+/-0.8 and 2.4+/-0.9 mmHg at month 1, 3 and 6 after cataract surgery. None of the studied eyes required the addition of anti-glaucoma medication.

Conclusions:

Cataract surgery had a lowering impact on IOP in eyes with open-angle glaucoma treated with latanoprost eye drops for at least 6 months postoperatively.
