Efficacy of standalone and combined phacoemulsification/ab-interno canaloplasty (ABiC) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the efficacy of ABiC as a standalone treatment and combined with cataract surgery in reducing IOP and medication use in POAG patients at 24-months postoperative

Setting:

El Paso Eye Surgeons, P.A., Private Practice

Methods:

This was a single center, prospective, nonrandomized study. Patients underwent ABiC either alone or in combination with cataract surgery. Primary endpoints were mean IOP and mean number of glaucoma medications.

Results:

In ABiC/phacoemulsification patients (n=34), mean IOP and medication use decreased from 19.4 ± 3.7 mm Hg on 2.6 ± 1.0 medications preoperatively to 12.7 ± 1.6 mm Hg on 0.6 ± 1.0 medications at 24 months (p<0.001). In standalone ABiC patients (n=41), mean IOP and medication use decreased from 21.2 ± 5.3 mm Hg on 3.0 ± 0.7 medications preoperatively to 12.1 ± 2.3 mm Hg on 1.2 ± 1.3 medications at 24 months (p=0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). At 24 months, 59.4% of patients were medication-free.

Conclusions:

ABiC is a versatile treatment option for POAG, effective both in conjunction with cataract surgery and as a standalone procedure in reducing IOP and medication use.
