Abstract Details
Purpose:
The Cypass Microstent (Transcend Medical, USA) is a biocompatible polyamide implant inserted in the suprachoroidal space combined with alone or combined with cataract surgery to improve aqueous humor outflow through the uveoscleral pathway.
Setting:
Clinic of Ophthalmology, St. Johannes Hospital, Dortmund, Germany
Methods:
In a retrospective clinical study, 220 mild to moderate glaucoma findings were treated with a cypass implant alone (Group 1: 98 patients) or combined with cataract surgery (Group 2: 122 patients). The follow-up time of the study was 1 year.
Results:
The mean preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) was 19.11 (± 8.22) mmHg in group 1 und 20.85 (± 8.34) in group 2. The mean IOP was 15.17 (± 5.85) mmHg 12 months postoperatively (percent pressure reduction: 20.62%, p <0.05) in group 1 and 18.61 (± 6.86) mmHg (percent pressure reduction: 10.74%, p > 0.05). The reduction of the number of glaucoma eye drops is 39,8 % in the group 1 and 23,3% in the group 2. In small number of patients (20,45%), additional surgical procedures were performed by cases that failed to reach the target pressure.
Conclusions:
Patients with combined cypass and cataract surgery had a significant reduction not only of the intraocular pressure but also the number of the glaucoma eye drops after one year. Both groups of patients had a similar safety profile with minor complications.
