Dislocation of a XEN glaucoma implant into the anterior chamber: a case report

Abstract Details

Purpose:

We describe a new complication of the XEN glaucoma implant. XEN glaucoma implant is e new minimally invasive device approved for the treatment of glaucoma. A 25 year old female was being followed and treated for juvenile glaucoma in our center. The XEN implant was successfully placed in left eye and adeguate intraocular pressure control was achieved for 4 months. Then the eye pressure increased and the XEN implant was found in the anterior chamber. We removed the XEN implant and a topical intraocular pressure lowering therapy had to be re-initiated to achieve adeguate pressure control.

Methods:

The XEN Gel stent is a 6 mm hydrophilic tube with 45 micron lumen size composed of a porcine collagen-derived gelatin crosslinked with glutaraldehyde. We implanted the XEN 45 (XEN gel stent, Aquesys, Inc) in a 25 year old female after the failure of topical therapy. We followed the patient 1 day post-op, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months and 3 months, than the patient at 4 month complained of discomfort and impaired vision. The eye pressure was increased and we observed the XEN implant in anterior chamber. We remove and analyzed the implant.

Results:

After 4 months the intraocular pressure increased because the dislocation of XEN implant into anterior chamber.

Conclusions:

We describe a new complication of the XEN glaucoma implant.
