Comparison of Goldmann applanation tonometry and non-contact tonometry

Purpose:
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Accurate measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) is necessary for the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma. In the present study we conducted a comparison of IOP measurements with Goldmann applanation tonometer and air puff tonometer.

General Hospital of Kastoria, Greece
Methods:
IOP measurements were taken from 58 eyes of 29 patients (12 men and 17 women, mean age 56.93±10.35) using the Goldmann applanation tonometer and the Reichert AT550 non contact tonometer. The results were processed with the spreadsheet program Excel of the office suite Microsoft Office 2007 and the statistical analysis program IBM SPSS Statistics 21.
Results:
When measuring with a Goldmann tonometer, the mean of the measurements was 15.84±3.27 mmHg while with the air puff tonometer the mean of the measurements was 14.97±3.43 mmHg. The mean of the absolute value of the difference between the two measurements was 1.47±1.32 mmHg. There was significant correlation between the two measurements (p<0.001).
Conclusions:
The non contact tonometer measurements showed good agreement with those of the Goldmann applanation tonometer, which is considered the golden standard in tonometry. It is therefore a good solution for screening, diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma with the additional advantages of not using anesthetic drops or dye and limiting the transmission of infections due to non-contact with the cornea.
