Visual and refractive changes after Q-adjusted FS-LASIK and FS-SMILE

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the results of femtosecond assisted LASIK and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) as regards safety, efficacy , predictability,corneal higher order aberrations and asphericity changes.
Setting:
Kasr Alainy School of Medicine, Cairo University
Methods:
The study included 60 eyes of patients with myopia or myopic astigmatism presenting for refractive error correction. Femtosecond assisted LASIK group included 30 eyes and SMILE group included 30 eyes.
The following tests were done for all patients preoperatively and at 3 months postoperatively: full ophthalmological examination, manifest refraction,UDVA, CDVA, corneal topography and corneal higher order aberrations using combined schimflug and placcido disc imaging namely CSO topography system (CSO, Firenze, Italy).
Results:
There were 86.67% of eyes in SMILE group, 93.33% eyes in FS-LASIK group had 20/20 or better UDVA with non-statistically significant difference of logMAR UDVA (P = 0.5774)with no statistically significant difference between both groups in Δ Q value with Fs-LASIK inducing more oblate anterior corneal shape (P = 0.2124).there was no statistically significant difference in the change in RMS of total corneal higher order aberration (P = 0.2) with no statistically significant difference in RMS of coma aberration (P = 0.0589)with no statistically significant difference in RMS of spherical aberration (P = 0.0543).
Conclusions:
Femtosecond small incision lenticule extraction is as safe, effective and predictable procedure as femtosecond assisted LASIK. Both procedures show non statistically significant difference on the effect on corneal asphericity and corneal higher order aberration changes.
