Enhancement options after SMILE: an overview of different techniques

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate SMILE enhancement different techniques. -PRK -Flap creation (off label) -Circle option (flap creation) -Capless / cap preserving re-SMILE (off label) -Sub SMILE re-treatment (SMILE at a deeper level) (off label)

Setting:

Cornea center & IFLC

Methods:

Retrospective assessment of re-treatment cases from more than 10000 eyes preformed. Time between primary surgery and re-treatment had to be at least 3 months. 5 eyes PRK, 2 eyes new flap creation, 3 eyes Circle option, 4 eyes Capless, 3 eyes Sub SMILE re-treatment (SMILE at a deeper level). Each technique has its indications. Surgical challenges, visual recovery and visual outcomes were assessed

Results:

All modalities had minimal Surgical complications, visual recovery varied widely between techniques yet at 1 month follow-up all cases showed excellent visual outcome.

Conclusions:

Selection of SMILE enchantment technique might me challenging as it is case specific and each type has its advantages and disadvantages yet visual outcomes can be very satisfactory
