Abstract Details
Purpose:
The purpose of the study was to identify the epidemiological characteristics, predisposing factors and clinical and microbiological profile of infectious keratitis in our hospital.
Setting:
Tertiary Hospital. Complejo Hospitalario de Navarra.
Methods:
A retrospective review of corneal scrapes recorded by the microbiology service between January 2014 and December 2017.
Results:
A total of 145 corneal scrape specimens were identified. Mean age was 49 years and there was a female predominace (57,2%). Contact lens wear was the main predisposing factor in 62 patients (42,9%). Corneal scrapes grew positive cultures in 37 patients. Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 24 (64,8%), while gram-negative bacteria accounted for 15 (40,5%) with the predominance of Pseudominas aeruginosa Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Topical treatment with more than two antibiotics was prescribed in 93 patients, being tobramycin the most used, 6 patients required surgery. The average time with topical antibiotic was 33 days.
Conclusions:
Wearing contact lenses remains the most important risk factor for infectious keratitis.
