Effects of disinfectants on bacteria that were obtained from aplanation tonometers

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To identify the bacteria that are isolated from applanation tonometers used in outpatient clinics at Department of Ophthalmology and present the effect of different disinfectants on growth of isolates in vitro.
Setting:
Anadolu University, Faculty of Science, Department of Microbiology
Methods:
Samples were taken from applanation prism surfaces with Stuart transport medium swab and were inoculated onto blood, Mac Conkey, chocolate, Saboraud dextrose, MRS and M-17 agars, brain heart infusion broth. Colonies grown on agars were evaluated for bacterial isolate identification. Then 6 different disinfectants were applied on the bacterial isolates and their inhibition on bacterial growth was measured. The disinfectants used were 70 % alcohol, 10 % polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine complex, a hand disinfectant containing 70 % alcohol, 6 % HCLi, 0,1 % NaOCL, a hard surface disinfectant spray containing didecyldimethyl ammonium chloride 0,25 %, ethanol 43 %, 2*propanol 20 %
Results:
Approximately hundred bacterial isolates were obtained from cultures of applanation tonometers. The main isolates were Staphylococcus spp, Bacillus spp and Micrococcus spp. Hard surface disinfectant, polvinylpyrolidone-iodine complex and HCL were effective on growth inhibition while hand disinfectant , NaOCL were less effective. The least effective one was 70 % alcohol.
Conclusions:
Many bacteria spp can be isolated from applanation tonometers. Alcohol solely is found to be ineffective in vitro as a mean of disinfection agent.
