Recurrence of keratoconus in corneal graft vs the cross-linked non-grafted other eye

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to report recurrence of keratoconus in a corneal graft versus the stable cross-linked other eye with keratoconus of the same patient.

Setting:

Cornea Cataract and Refractive Surgery , Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital, Mumbai

Methods:

Left Eye corneal transplant was done for a patient with advanced keratoconus. All sutures were out in the left eye within a year. collagen cross linking was done in the right eye in the same year.

Results:

The patient had stable refraction and vision in both eyes for 4 years. The left grafted eye showed a recurrence of keratoconus as seen on topography and a decrease in visual acuity. the graft host junction was well opposed as seen on ASOCT. The right cross linked non grafted eye was stable in terms of vision, refraction and topography.

Conclusions:

This case study provides a direct comparison in a cross linked non grafted eye versus the non crossliked grafted other eye of same patient. it questions the need to routinrly cross link patients post corneal grafting for keratoconus after suture removal
