Contact lens application to improve visual acuity after corneal collagen cross-linking in patients with keratoconus

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the changes in corneal topographic values and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) with suitable contact lens (CL) after cross-linking (CXL) treatment for keratoconus.

Setting:

Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Ankara, Turkey

Methods:

Fifteen patients who underwent corneal collagen CXL for keratoconus were included in this study. Patients’ maximum keratometry (Kmax) values were recorded before and after treatment procedure at 1st and 4th months. BCVA was evaluated before and after CXL at 4th month when suitable CLs were applied. Statistical analysis was performed with the SPS 22.0. Descriptive data were expressed as mean±SD and changes analyzed with Paired t test for baseline and following visits.

Results:

A total of 15 keratoconus patients were included in this study. The mean age was 20.2±6.9 years. Before and after CXL at 1st and 4th month, the mean Kmax values were 57.3±5.4, 56.9±5.3 and 55.6±5.9, respectively. The differences between 1st and 4th month Kmax values (p= 0.003) were statistically significant. At 4th month after CXL all the patients were given CLs to improve BCVA. Hybrid (40%), Toris-K soft (13.3%), mini-scleral (20%), RGP (6.7%) and toric CLs (20%) were applied to the patients. After CL wear BCVA was increased from 0.28±0.1 to 0.68±0.2 (p< 0.001).

Conclusions:

After CXL treatment a satisfactory visual acuity can be achieved with suitable contact lens application in patients with keratoconus.
