Evaluation of corneal deformation parameters provided by the Corvis ST in patients with glaucoma and ocular hypertension

Purpose:
To compare corneal deformation response between patients with primaryopen-angle glaucoma (POAG), ocular hypertension (OHT), and healthy subjects.
Setting:
Ophthalmiatrion Eye Hospital Athens Greece
Methods:
This prospective, randomized study included 1 eye of 146subjects (38 controls, 50 OHT and 58 POAG patients), which underwent IOP measurements taken 3 times with Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) and Corvis-ST in random order.Primary open-angle glaucoma was confirmed by presence of glaucomatous optic disc damage with corresponding visual field defect. Eyes with ocular hypertension were treated for increased intraocular pressure and did not have optic disk damage or visual field defect. Corvis ST (CST) was used to measure 15 parameters of corneal deformation response and central corneal thickness (CCT).
Results:
The deformation amplitude (DA), and applanation time 2 (A2T) were lower in the POAG and OHT groups, whereas the applanation time 1 (A1T), and peak distance (PD) were greater in the POAG and OHT groups than in the healthy controls (all P < 0.05). Significant associations were found between IOP and all of these parameters in each group.No other parameter including Deformation amplitude ratio 1 or Corvis Biomechanical index were different in three groups.
Conclusions:
Patients with POAG or OHT showed significantly greater A1T and lower DA and A2T values than healthy controls, indicating a less deformable cornea in patients with various stages of the disease
