Corneal thickness changes after cataract surgery: comparison between two devices

Purpose:
To compare Nidek CEM-530 specular microscope and Pentacam HR corneal thickness (CT) changes after cataract surgery.
Setting:
University Eye Clinic, Department of Medicine, Surgery and Dentistry, University of Salerno
Methods:
The CT of 27 eyes of patients screened to undergo cataract surgery were analyzed before and one month after the surgical procedure with Nidek CEM-530 specular microscopy at the center of the cornea and with Oculus Pentacam HR Scheimplflug camera at the corneal apex (CA), at the pupil center (PC), at the thinnest point (TP) with Pentacam HR, in a randomized order at the same day time.
Results:
CT mean difference with CEM-530 was 6.2±14.9µm, with Pentacam HR at the CA was 3.9±15.1µm, at the PC it was 4.2±15.5µm, at the TP it was 2±15.6µm, with a non-significant difference between the two devices, CEM-530 and PC (p= 0.815), CA (p= 0.935), and TP (p=0,769), respectively.
Conclusions:
Our results suggest that the corneal thickness changes detected by the two devices both in operated and fellow eyes are similar, making the results reliably, but, as the measurements obtained before and after are different, they cannot be used interchangeably.
