Evaluation of 42 indices of 18 keratoconic eyes which underwent progressive thickness intracorneal ring implantation

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate changes on refractive, topographic and keratoconic indices after progressive thickness intracorneal ring implantation.
Setting:
The surgeries were performed by single surgeon in Dunyagoz, Etiler hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.
Methods:
This study consisted 18 eyes which underwent progressive thickness intracorneal ring implantation.
The channels were created with femtosecond laser (IFS, Intralase 150 kHz). The progressive thickness intracorneal ring segments (Keraring AS, Mediphacos) were used.
The refraction, visual acuity, keratometic values (front and back), pachymetry, progression indices, keratoconic indices (such as df, db, dp, dt, da, d, ISV, IVA, KI, CKI, IHA, IHD), vertical coma and elevation were evaluated pre and post operatively with Pentacam measurements.
The mean follow up period was 14 months.
Results:
28 of 42 indices showed statistical significant change after the statistical evaluation. Refraction (Sphere, astigmatism in front and back, refractive cylinder, topography cylinder) and the visual acuity (UCVA, BCVA) showed significant improvement. Keratometric values (K1 and K2 front, Km Front, mean K, max K) showed significant decrease as well as the indices Df, Dt, D, ISV, IVA, KI, IHD. Additionally, decrease on Vertical Coma and Elevation in front and back were observed. No intra and postoperative complications were observed.
Conclusions:
This study outcomes showed that the progressive thickness intracorneal ring implantation is safe and effective for improving visual acuity in keratoconic eyes. The study outcomes also concluded that the implantation does not only improve the refaction and visual acuity, but also it improves the keratoconic state of the patients.
