Corneal biomechanical changes following small incision lenticule extraction

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine the change in the corneal biomechanics ( the corneal hysteresis and corneal resistance factor after small incision lenticule extraction and if they are related to the extracted lenticule thickness, so we can predict the change prior to surgery.
Setting:
Kasr Alainy school of medicine and I Scan ophthalmology center
Methods:
30 eyes of 15 myopic patients with refractive error ranging from -1.5 to -8.5 diopters underwent SMILE procedure .The patients underwent meticulous ophthalmological examination and ORA was done before the procedure and one month following it to evaluate the change in the corneal biomechanics.
Results:
Corneal biomechanics shows significant decline after the procedure:
∆CH= -1.6 ±1.87 mmHg
∆CRF= -2.62 ±1.49 mmHg
and the change in CRF was more than CH
Significant correlation was found between ∆CH, ∆ CRF and the lenticule thickness(r=-0.376, p=0.04) (r=-0.41, p=0.025) respectively.
∆CRF/LT= -0.029±0.01
∆CH/ LT= -0.018 ±0.01
Conclusions:
CH and CRF both shows significant decline after the procedure.
The postoperative decline in CH and CRF was directly proportionate to the lenticule thickness, so it is predictable.
