Experience of keratobioimplant implantation for keratoconus and corneal scars

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy of penetrating keratoplasty (PK) with implantation of keratobioimplantat (KBIm) for keratoconus of stage 4 (KK4) and corneal scars(CS).

Setting:

Kharkiv Ophthalmology Clinic № 14, Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, Ophthalmology Department, Ukraine

Methods:

We performed 14 PK with KBIm on 14 patients aged 18-50 years old. 10 patients were with KK4 and 4 patients were with CS. Visual acute (VA) was from light projection to 0.05. Visometry, tonometry, biomicroscopy, keratorefractometry, pahimetry, keratotopography, endothelial cells microscopy, ultrasound of eye were evaluated. We used KBIm with number of endothelial cells no less than 2700-3000. Operations were performed with Baron system. Diameter of donor’s cornea was 7.0-7.5 mm for KK4 and 7.0-8.5 mm for CS.

Results:

We observed epithelialization of KBIm 5-7 days after operation. In one case corneal edema had been for 6 months. In all cases we received clear cornea. Follow up for all patients was 18 months. Best corrected VA was 0.3 in 6 patients; 0.4-0.5 - in 5 patients; 0.7-0.8 – in 3 patients. Postoperative astigmatism was from 2.0 D to 4.0 D. Refraction in 9 patients was hyperopia.

Conclusions:

PK with KBIm is an effective method for treatment of KK4 and CS. It allows to restore vision for visually impaired patients.
