Corneal wavefront-guided transepithelial phototherapeutic keratectomy for subepithelial corneal infiltrates after epidemic keratoconjunctivitis

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate visual and refractive results after corneal wavefront guided transepithelial phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) for subepithelial infiltrates after adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis.

Setting:

Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Science,ISTANBUL,TURKEY

Methods:

The records of patients who underwent corneal wavefront guided transepithelial PTK for subepithelial infiltrates were retrospectively reviewed. Preoperative and postoperative visual acuity (VA)(Snellen Chart),refractive status and the results of slit-lamp biomicroscopy examinations as well as complications were recorded. The PTK procedure was performed under topical anesthesia with an Schwind Amaris excimer laser system. Patients' manifest refraction values, topographical examination results, and corneal aberrations before and after surgery were analyzed.

Results:

Thirty-one eyes of 12 women (57%) and 9 men (43%) were treated. The mean follow-up time was 9.2±3.2 (range: 3-18) months, and the mean maximum ablation depth was 89.2±3.2 (range: 78-110) μm. Postoperative median uncorrected-corrected VA increased from 0.3±0.1to 0.6±0.2 (P = 0.02). Persistent corneal haze developed in 1 eyes of 1 patients.

Conclusions:

Corneal wavefront guided transepithelial PTK is an effective and safety method for treating corneal opacity after epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. It provides significant improvements in VA with low complication rate.
