Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the pain in patients underwent amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) in ocular surface pathologies.

Setting:

Ankara numune Research and Training Hospital

Methods:

This study investigated 287 eyes of 287 patients who underwent AMT between November 2013 and January 2018. The ocular surface pathologies were divided into two groups according to the presence of infection. Group 1 included non-infectious persistent epithelial defect and Group 2 included infectious keratitis. Amniotic membrane was sutured with an epithelial face up. Pain sensation was evaluated by visual analog scale (VAS) in pre-operative and post-operative first and third days.

Results:

The preoperative, postoperative first and third day pain score was 8.23±2.06, 7.03±2.4 and 3.25±1.26 respectively. Pain scores showed significant difference between baseline and third day. (p=0.036) However, pain scores did not correlate with the preoperative diagnosis.

Conclusions:

The amniotic membrane may be considered for reducing the pain due to ocular surface pathologies.
