Impact of MyoRing implantation on vision and quality of life of keratoconus patients

Abstract Details
Purpose:
This study aimed to evaluate visual and quality of life of keratoconic patients who underwent MyoRing implantation in the period between Dec 2015 and Dec 2016.
Setting:
Sudan Eye Center (SEC), Khartoum-Sudan.
Methods:
A total of 34 eyes from 25 patients who consecutively underwent MyoRing implantation were studied. The main parameters evaluated included keratometry readings, refractive status, visual acuity and quality of life scores. Clinical data were evaluated pre-operatively and 1 month, 3 months and 6 months post-operation. Visual acuity, refractive, corneal curvature and topography were evaluated using. Quality of life of patients was assessed with spectacle correction (pre-operation) and after MyoRing implantation using the Quality of Life Impact of Refractive Correction questionnaire (QIRC).
Results:
A statistically significant flattening of corneal contours (up to 7.83 D) was noted 6 months after surgery with p values of < 0.001. Significant improvement was also detected in unaided post-operative (6 month) visual acuity compared to pre-operative unaided (p < 0.001) and corrected visual acuity (p = 0.009). MyoRing implantation showed significant improvement of patients’ quality of life (QOL) compared to that with spectacle pre-operation (p < 0.001).
Conclusions:
MyoRing implantation allows a significant reduction of myopia and astigmatic refractive errors resulting from keratoconus because of the corneal flattening induced which significantly contributes in the improved visual outcome and quality of life.
