Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the results of conjunctivolimbal autograft transplantation in cases with primary and recurrent pterygium

Setting:

Gazipasa State Hospital - Antalya/ TURKEY

Methods:

A total of 42 eyes of 38 patients who were operated for pterygium with conjunctivolimbal autograft technique between may 2016- may 2017 with at least 6 months of follow-up were retrospectively assessed. 16 eyes were recurrent and 26 eyes were primary ptergium. The pterygium was dissected from the cornea, limbus and adjacent sclera and removed. A free conjunctival graft which contained the transitional conjonctival-corneal area was grafted to the scleral bed.

Results:

No recurrences developed in 26 eyes with primary pterygium, but there were 2 recurrences in 16 eyes with recurrent pterygium. Reoperations with the same technique were performed in these 2 cases resulting in recovery of these lesions. General recurrence rate was 4,7%. 1 tenon cist involved after the operation 1 month later in recurrent ptergium surgery.

Conclusions:

Conjunctivolimbal autograft transplantation is a good alternative treatment modality in pterygium surgery with high success and low complication rates and good cosmetic appearance.
