Collagen cross-linking for treatment of refractory infectious keratitis

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy of riboflavin/UV collagen cross-linking (CXL) in the treatment of refractory infectious keratitis.

Setting:

This study was conducted at Ophthalmology department, Benha University Hospital.

Methods:

10 eyes of 10 patients with refractory infectious keratitis underwent riboflavin/UV collagen cross-linking (CXL) in addition to anti-microbial treatment. Corrected distance visual acuity, slit lamp criteria of the corneal ulcer, corneal swab for culture and sensitivity and ultrasound pachymetry for corneal thickness were recorded for each patient. Student t-test was used for statistical analysis. P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results:

Progression of keratitis was arrested in all cases. Mean BCVA improved from (1.18±0.68) logMAR pre CXL to (0.62±0.46) logMAR 3 months after treatment (P value 0.000046). Pain improved in all cases. Corneal swabs showed negative growth in the 10 cases. None of the 10 cases required emergency keratoplasty.

Conclusions:

Corneal collagen cross linking is a promising adjuvant therapy for refractory infectious keratitis.
