Intraoperative Descemet's membrane unfolding manipulations and long-term endothelial cell loss after DMEK

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the longevity, number and characteristics of the surgical maneuvers necessary for Descemet’s membrane (DM) roll unfolding during DMEK on the postoperative endothelial cell loss and visual recovery.

Setting:

S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institution, Moscow, Russia

Methods:

Retrospective analysis included 50 patients. Two types of folding techniques were used – “classic” roll-DM and modified endothelium-inside roll. Patients were divided into 3 sub-groups depending on the time of DM unfolding and the number of required manipulations: 1 - time less 5 min, 2 – 5-10 min, 3 – over 10 min. The number of surgical maneuvers (corneal tapping, intracameral BSS and air injections) will be assessed in all sub-groups. BCVA, corneal pachymetry and endothelial cell density, were evaluated prior to surgery on the donor cornea and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after the surgery.

Results:

The results will be presented at the time of presentation.

Conclusions:

We expect the presence of possible link in between the longevity and number of surgical manipulations needed to unscroll the DM roll to be associated with the rates of visual recovery and the EC loss after surgical procedure.
