Abstract Details

Purpose:

to evaluate the changes in central corneal thickness (CCT) and corneal volume (CV) in eyes that underwent corneal crosslinking (CCL)

Setting:

National Ophtalmology Centre named after acad. Zarifa Aliyeva.

Methods:

CCT and CV obtained with an Oculus Pentacam before, 1, 3 and 6 months after CCL were analyzed in 57 eyes of 52 patients with a mean preoperative refraction of -1.55 ± 2.33 D, and mean preoperative Sim?K of 46.98 ± 4.07 D, mean CCT of 491 ± 35 µm and mean CV of 56.72 ± 2.86 mm3 .

Results:

one month after CCL, we observed a statistically significant decrease (p<0.01) both in CCT (mean 449 ± 37 µm) and CV (mean 54.71 ± 3.15 mm3). Three months after CCL, we observed a further non significant decrease (p<0.6) in CCT (mean 448 ± 37 µm) and a significant decrease (p<0.01) in CV (mean 55.27 ± 3.07 mm3). Six months after CCL we observed a statistically significant increase (p<0.01) in CCT (mean 471 ± 46 µm) and a no significant increase (p<0.1) in CV (mean 56.03 ± 3.5 mm3).

Conclusions:

even if our results have to be confirmed in further studies with larger population and longer follow up, our findings suggest that there is a corneal remodelling after CCL up to six months.
