Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the efficacies of 3% diquafosol and 0.1% sodium hyaluronate in patientswith dry eye after cataract surgeryusing the noninvasive keratograph 5M (Oculus K5M) and OPD-Scan III.

Setting:

Lee Eye Clinic, Busan, Korea

Methods:

120 eyes of 92 dry eye patients who had undergone cataractsurgery were enrolled and randomly divided into a diquafosol group (60 eyes) and a sodium hyaluronate group (60 eyes). Both groups instilled each eye drop from postoperative day 1 to week 8. The tear meniscus height (TMH), firstnon-invasive keratograph break-up time (f-NIKBUT) and average non-invasive keratograph break-up time (avg-NIKBUT) were measured at 1, 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively using the noninvasive Keratograph 5M. Corneal wavefront aberrations over 3mm and 5mm zone and corneal optical quality parameters including modulation transfer function (MTF), Point-spread function (PSF) were measured using OPD-Scan III.

Results:

There were no significant difference in TMH and NIKBUT between 2 groups at 1 week. TMH, f-NIKBUT and avg-NIKBUT of the diquafosol group was significantly higher than the sodium hyaluronate group at 4 and 8 weeks. The diquafosol group showed statistically significant improvement in TMH, f-NIKBUT and avg-NIKBUT at 4 weeks and 8weeks after surgery than at baseline. The sodium hyaluronate group showed no significant improvements in the TMH, f-NIKBUT and avg-NIKBUT throughout the study period. There were no significant difference in the corneal wavefront aberrations, MTF, and PSF between the 2 groups at 1, 4, and 8 weeks.

Conclusions:

Treatment with 3% Diquafosol ophthalmic solution was shown to be an effective treatment for improvements of tearfilm stability and tear height for the patients with dry eye after cataract surgery.
