Abstract Details

Purpose:

Based on the many features and possible applications of ozone, aims of the present study is an evaluation of a new liposomal ozonated oil formulation plus hypromellose, specifically developed for ophthalmic use, instilled 4 times a day to promote wound healing and treat some infective pathologies in common eye disorders encountered in humans.

Setting:

Eye Clinic, “A. Fiorini” Hospital, Sapienza University of Rome, Terracina (Latina), Italy

Methods:

A 33-years-old man with a history of use of contact lens presented with pain and redness in one eye. Evaluation revealed conjunctival hyperemia and inferior corneal abrasion. A 79-years-old woman presented with eye pain and discharge in one eye. Examination revealed band keratopathy complicated by inferior corneal superficial ulcer. A 71-years-old man with a history of previous herpes related corneal ulcer referred because of pain in one eye. Evaluation showed area of stromal keratitis with stromal infiltrate and central corneal ulcer. A seven days therapy with ozonated oil formulation four-times-a day was prescribed in all the mentioned cases.

Results:

Three days later the 33-years-old patient came to our attention without any ocular discomfort and the examination showed a clear cornea, good healing of the defect and no sign of inflammation. Post treatment evaluation of 79-years-old women revealed improvement of clinical signs with reduction of the infiltrate and the edema, moreover a partial healing of the ulcer with a residual corneal pooling using the cobalt blue filter was shown. Regarding the related symptoms only a slight photophobia remained. Corneal involvement of the 71-years-old man was more circumscribed, signs of staining satisfactorily resolved with significant reduction of photophobia and glare symptoms.

Conclusions:

Ozonated oil formulation drops seem to be safe and effective in the treatment of some ocular surface disorders, like conjunctivitis, keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis and corneal ulcers with positive results.
