Can a regenerating agent help corneal wound-healing with impaired sensitivity?

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To show use of regenerating matrix therapy (RGTA), which is heparan sulfate analog, and its efficiency in corneal diseases after having other treatments.

Setting:

University Hospital Center «Sestre milosrdnice», Eye Clinic, Zagreb, CROATIA

Methods:

We present 5 patients (6 eyes) with severe neurotrophic keratopathy. They started to apply RGTA drops once a day every other day in effected eye and also preservative free artificial tears, after they had already had a history of a long conventional therapy. Evolution and follow-up during treatment were evaluated by best corrected visual acuity (BCVA, logMAR), corneal reflex test, slit-lamp examination, fluorescein-dye testing and photography at the beginning of therapy, during and at the end.

Results:

After 10 to 14 days the progress was noticed. Four out of five patients were subjectively feeling better, they had no pain and didn't feel gritty. Only one patient didn't feel difference with the treatment and he always had strange sensations in his eye. 3 patients had improved visual acuity. They all had some less stromal hazing which was noticed while taking photographs.

Conclusions:

During 4 to 6 months follow up we can say that RGTA could be a potentially useful and noninvasive therapeutic approach in neurotrophic keratopathy management.
