Abstract Details
Purpose:
to test the role of topical ascorbic acid in preventing perforation in infective impending perforating corneal ulcers
Setting:
Cornea clinic, Ophthalmology department, Sohag Faculty of Medicine, Sohag University, Sohag, Egypt
Methods:
Patients diagnosed with resistant bacterial corneal ulcer attending the corneal clinic between April 2017-February 2018 were enrolled. Eyes with impending corneal ulcers were divided in two groups: group 1; Topical ascorbic acid 10% was used in 8 eyes with full regimen of topical antibiotics. Group 2; routine antibiotic regimen was used in 10 eyes.
Results:
The time required for healing was not significantly altered by treatment in both groups. Yet the number of perforated corneal ulcers was higher in the control group ( 2 eyes relative to no eye suffered perforation in group 1).
Conclusions:
Topical ascorbic acid 10% may have an adjunctive role in preventing perforation in impending corneal ulcerations
