Effects of demodex on corneal findings in paediatric patients with chronic blepharitis

Abstract Details

Purpose:

In this study our aim was to investigate the effect of the Demodex infestation on corneal findings in patients with chronic blepharitis.

Setting:

Uludag University, Department of Ophthalmology

Methods:

Files of 110 patients with chronic blepharitis were reviewed retrospectively. 17 patients who were 16 years old or younger were included in the study. All patients underwent parasitological investigation for Demodex infestation.

Results:

Seven female, 10 male patients were included in the study. Mean age was 6.9 years. Symptoms were frequent hordeolum/ chalazion in 5 patients, redness in 8 and burning and stinging in 4 patients. In biomicroscobic examination, 8 patients had anterior blepharitis, 5 had posterior and 4 had both. Thirty five percent of those patients were Demodex positive and mean age of those was 7,5 years Nine patients had corneal findings (keratitis, haze, etc.) and 3 of those were Demodex positive.

Conclusions:

Demodex was found positive in pediatric patients with chronic blepharitis at pre-pubertal ages. However Demodex positivity rates were similar in patients with or without corneal findings.
