Abstract Details
Purpose:
We report the clinical characteristics and treatment modalities of nine cases of pediatric ocular acne rosacea with long term follow-up.
Setting:
Retrospective case series in Bayındır Kavaklıdere Hospital
Methods:
The medical records of patients diagnosed with pediatric ocular acne rosacea were evaluated. Diagnostic criteria included blepharitis, meibomian gland disease, blepharitis, conjunctival hyperemia, limbal involvement, punctate keratitis, corneal vascularization and peripheral corneal infiltrates
Results:
Three male and six female patients with bilateral disease aged between 3 to 14 years were included.The mean follow-up time was 61.55±42.68 (25-147) months.Meibomitis, blepharitis, conjunctival hyperemia, and punctuate keratitis were present in each case. Cutaneous involvement was present in six (66.7%), limbal involvement in 8 (%88.9), chalazia in five, corneal infiltrates in two patients.Topical antibiotic drops and warm compresses were given in each cases, topical 0.05% cyclosporine in four and lipid containing artificial tears in two children.Systemic antibiotic treatment (doxycycline,erythromycin or azythromycin) were given to six cases that showed favorable improvement at least three months following the therapy.
Conclusions:
Ophthalmologist should be aware of the diagnosis of acne rosacea in children presenting with meibomian gland disease, chalazia and peripheral corneal infiltrates.
