Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the posterior corneal radii in patients with keratoconus or pellucid marginal degeneration and healthy patients by using manual calculation with AS OCT .
Setting:
The study took place at the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of medicine, Medical university Plovdiv.
Methods:
We used AS OCT (Optovue RTVue-100) and the software of the device to measure the height of the segment and the chord in a pachymetry scan and then to manually calculate the posterior radius using the formula r= (4H2+L2)/8H,(H- height of the segment, L- chord of the segment). We assumed that the posterior surface of the cornea is a part of a sphere. Horizontal and vertical radii were measured in the group with ectatic disorders and in the control group. Each group contained 15 patients/30 eyes, that were age and sex matched. The data was analyzed with Independent samples t-test.
Results:
Results/Conclusion: The mean values of the horizontal and the vertical radii were respectively 6.2770 and 6.3017 in the group with ectatic corneas. In contrast the values in the healthy control group were as follows: horizontal 7.2328 and the vertical 7.3170 . A statistically significant difference was found between radii in the both groups (p<0,001 , confidence interval 95%).
Conclusions:
We can conclude that our Rh1/Rh2 and Rv1/Rv2 can be used to distinguish healthy from ectatic corneas.
